from the vine to your table

about the grapes

Before Wickham Estate was a Vineyard, a family-owned the grounds and had it as an Apple Farm. The Chandleys decided that they wanted to own a Vineyard, did the research, and planted their first 7 acres in 1970. In 1974, the second 7 acres were planted, and they began the life of Vineyard owner.

The Vineyards looks a little different from a usual Vineyard you see as the Vines are spaced further apart. This is because the Family decided to keep their old apple farming equipment to harvest the Vines and this equipment is much bigger than Vineyard machinery!

The Vines are planted on a Geneva double curtain system which helps the growth of the Vines as it opens them up to the sunshine. This system avoids frost as the main body of the Vine is grown far off the frost at ground level.

Here at Wickham Estate, we grow 15 different varieties of grape, predominantly of German descent. Weather depending, the bud burst is in April, the Vines flower in June and we harvest late September early October. Our specialist Vine team care for the Vines all year round and come harvesting, waiting for the perfect time to pluck the grapes to make the wine you drink on your special day!
